e-Book Information:
I must admit that I am fairly new to e-Books but as mentioned elsewhere I am an avid reader. In the first 3 months of 2018 I read 37 e-Books, mostly novels; so I feel able to make some comments about their good and bad points.
Why read an e-Book?
Good points:
1. No heavy book to hold with one hand whilst scoffing a sandwich, just rest your iPad or Kindle on your knee and scroll through it with one hand while eating with the other.
2. Cheaper books.
3. No heavy books to carry about when travelling.
4 You can read in the dark and not disturb the other persons snoring.
5. You don't have to get out of bed to get a new book.
6. If you are in the average hotel / motel you cannot easily read a paperback by the light of a 40 watt bulb, reading an e-Book is not a problem.
7. If you fall asleep you don't lose your page.
8. If you have read an e-Book you want to keep you can just delete the content and not the cover; you can then download the book again later so it doesn't take up room in the iPad or Kindle memory.
Bad points:
1. You have to keep the battery charged up on your reader; but if my iPad goes flat I carry on reading on my iPod. As soon as I open the book on the iPod it asks if I want to go to the last page I was reading in the iPad (and of course Vici-verci), now that's what I call clever!
2. It is difficult to read in positions subject to bright sunlight on the screen.
3. To be honest I have yet to read a technical or reference type book on it and suspect that they would be an easier read in paperback format.
e-Book reading tips for new readers:
1. Once you have paid for and downloaded your e-Book you can delete it from your device at any time. Hold the stylus firmly on the book cover and then select "Remove from Device" (do not select permanent deletion). This act will free up space on your iPad / Kindle Reader.
You can download your book at any time without further payment, hold the stylus firmly on the cover of the book and then select 'Download'.
2. If the book has been amended without changing the 'Edition Number' etc. then if you remove a book from your device and then download it again you should get the latest amended version. (Try it with my book in a month's time just in case I have amended it).
3. If you tap the stylus on the screen with the book open it will display 3 x symbols in the top left hand corner of the screen, namely; a down arrow, 3 x lines and the letter 'Q'.
4. Tapping the down arrow will take you to your Library and all the covers of your books will be displayed. Tap on a book cover to open the book.
5. Tapping the 3 x lines symbol will take you to a menu. The menu is self explanatory. A good feature is the 'Table of Contents' selecting this will display a list of Chapters and if you select a Chapter the book will open at that Chapter.
6. Tapping the letter 'Q' will allow you to search for a word or phrase in the book.
One last thought on e-Books; it seems ironic that after spending considerable time and effort producing an e-Book I still have to buy a copy if I want it on my iPad, which of course I do! And that’s another good point, if you buy an e-book it will appear on every ‘device’ you have.
